This month I am sharing a new series on the science of handwriting analysis. Your handwriting is as unique as your fingerprint, so follow along and see what you can spot in yours or someone else’s writing!  

Let’s begin with what the slant of your handwriting shows about your emotional responsiveness.

We all have emotions whether we keep them under control or enthusiastically express them.

One of the most important traits when we begin an analysis is with a person’s slant.

To achieve this accurately, we use a clear plastic emotional gauge. 

See sample #1. Unfortunately, you cannot just “eyeball” a person’s handwriting and accurately determine its slant. You must do dozens and dozens of examples to really master this process!

Slants can be deceiving. Early in my training, I would often see a writing that looked like it was backhand when in reality it was not. A true FA slant is that of an introvert. We use a number of letters to measure a slant. The easiest letters are the cursive t, b, l, m, n, r, s, d, h, and k.

The Handwriting University method states that the stroke must have a starting and ending point at the baseline. See samples in  #2. 

You start by placing a dot at the baseline where a letter begins. Then another dot at the top of the letter at its highest point, and finally another one where it ends at the baseline again. You then use a straight edge to connect the dots and beyond to see the line so that you can place the gauge over it to measure the slant.

You can see the procedure. Measuring the m’s and n’s will give the emotional response to thinking. The circle letters and the e’s will indicate the influence of the emotions upon the writer’s mundane living and his ideas. Measurement of the tall loops will determine the emotional reaction to the philosophical. The t’s and d’s will show the emotional aspect of pride and dignity.

Here is  a beginner’s general overview of what slant indicates about a person:

A vertical slant reveals logic and restrained emotion. These writers keep their emotions hidden; they are reserved and emotionally distant. It is not that they don’t have emotions, they do, maybe as deeply as anyone else does, it’s just that they don’t express them easily.

A leftward slant signifies someone who would rather hold his emotions inside and has a fear of expressing himself. To get along with this person, you must understand that they will be emotionally cold much of the time. If you expect them to be consistently giving and expressing how they feel toward you, you are likely to be disappointed.

A hard right-handed slant signifies an emotionally expressive person. This writer needs to interact with people. He has a need to express his emotions. He responds sympathetically to others. The farther to the right the slant becomes, the more emotionally impulsive the writer will be. Can you guess your slant?
